President’s Message

Spring 2008

25th Anniversary

The initial meeting of what would become the Kingston and District Branch was held in the Wilson Room of the Kingston Public Library October 5th, 1982. This resulted in the election of the first ten member Executive Committee.

The Branch received its official charter from National Office December 7th, 1982 and has since grown to over 3,000 members.

December 2007 saw the wrap-up of our yearlong 25th Anniversary celebration when 30 past board members attended a luncheon hosted by the current board of directors on December 7th, 2007 at the Communications and Electronics Museum on Canadian Forces Base Kingston. The purpose of the luncheon was to acknowledge the contributions made over the past 25 years by the many volunteers who gave freely of their time and talent to bring the branch to the level of success it enjoys today.

2008 - Annual General Meeting

This year, 2008, will be a year of change for the branch resulting from decisions taken at the Triennial Convention held last year in Ottawa. Changes to National By-Laws now require branches to hold at least one Annual General Meeting of the membership not later than 1 May, and submit a report to Ottawa regarding the AGM not later than 15 May. Therefore, although your branch held an AGM last November, we will be changing the date of our AGM to April to meet these new requirements. Several factors were considered in choosing April; it meets the requirements of the By-Law; it allows sufficient time to prepare the required report; weather/darkness is generally less of a factor in April; and many of the snowbirds will have returned to their nests.

Hopefully these factors will help us see a larger turn out for our AGM 2008. Look for the response form elsewhere in this issue. And while the evening is shown as a meeting followed by dinner, members who wish to attend the meeting only but choose not to stay for the dinner are more than welcome to do so. Please simply indicate on your response form that you will be attending the meeting only. We require this information to ensure we have enough seating for all.

What? Another AGM!

Yes, you’re right! Those of you who attended our Annual General Meeting (AGM) held last November, when seeing the notice below will, I’m sure, be wondering why are they holding another AGM so soon? Simple fact is, we have to!! As indicated on the president’s page, recent changes at the National level have allowed us little option. Not that it’s a bad thing, we just have to make our transition this year and henceforth, our AGM will be held in April.  Please plan to come out and join us. Learn more about your branch, who, what, where, when and how it operates.

Meet & greet: 5:30 pm; Meeting 6 pm; & Dinner 7 pm.

Oh! and by the way, you will get to vote on the new Branch By-Laws...

CORRECTION...

(Not to anything we said but)  correction all the same.  Last fall, Treasury Board Secretariat sent a notice to pensioners called:

“Overview of the Amendment to the Coordination Formula of the Public Service (PS), Canadian Forces (CF) and RCMP pension plans with the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP).”

That notice had a box saying:

“For more information about tax implications, please visit the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Web site at: www.cra.gc.ca/pension”.

Well, guess what; that link does not work.  If you really want to get information about the tax implications, you will have to try: http://www.cra.gc.ca/agency/budget/2006/pspp-e.html

WEB Site

Talking of website, how many of us take a peek at the branch web site from time to time (http://www.kingstonfsna.ca/).  You know, the Branch report comes out only four times a year but the web site is amended as often as necessary.  Any news of importance to FSNA members is posted on the Bulletin Board of the website as we become aware of such news. It is a much faster way to get the information out to you than this seasonal piece of paper.

We welcome a new Health Benefits Director

E-Mail Address

Those of us who are observant (here we go again. Ron will be getting calls from those of you who feel that I am being insulting by suggesting that some of you are not observant)...as I was saying, you will have noticed that the e-mail address in our “Where to find us” box has changed.  Yes, please use kingston.fsna@gmail.com to get in touch with the branch.  The old e-mail address is that of the webmaster.

Annual Dues

All those who pay their annual membership dues by cheque and missed the deadline for payment, which was December 31st , are reminded to please forward their cheque to the Branch address as soon as possible.
