The Kingston Branch Report

From the President’s Desk

Winter 2009

Fall Outreach

Our luncheon at The Cove Inn, Westport, 27 October was another great success.  Many thanks to Noel and the folks at The Cove for taking such good care of us.

Winter Outreach

Our next event will be our winter-cum-Valentine’s Day luncheon in Brockville, 9 February 2010 at   cj’s Banquet Hall. See inside for details.

Branch Secretary

Our last secretary was, unfortunately, unable to continue in the job, and we began the task of looking for a replacement.  I’m happy to report that one of our past secretaries has stepped forward to fill the gap for now. Many thanks to Lois for returning, and Barb for filling in.

Membership Renewal

Our membership director has asked me to thank all those members who pay their membership dues annually by cheque, and who responded to the reminder in our last Branch Report and sent in their renewal fees. If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from her, please be advised that we usually don’t receive the replacement membership cards from National Office until late October or early November.  Rest assured we will send out your receipt and new cards as soon as we have them.

For those who haven’t yet sent in their renewal fee, see the reminder inside.

Regards,

          Ron Henderson

There seems to be some persistent confusion among the members as to when and whether it is necessary to renew membership by cheque or not.  Let me try to clarify.

There are two methods of paying for your membership:

 1. Payment by Dues Deduction at Source (DDS). By this method the pension office deducts your membership dues directly from your pension by way of monthly deductions.  Once you have subscribed to this method it is continuous and simple; no annual renewal is required!  It does require the initial completion of a form permitting the relevant pension office to make the deduction.

2.  Payment by cheque.  This is an annual renewal method whereby membership fees are due and payable by 31 December of each year.  Members should send their renewal fees to the address above by this date.

If you are in doubt as to which method you use, the simplest way is to check your membership card.  If the expiry date on the card is March 31, 2010, you pay by DDS and you need take no further action.  Your new card will come to you early in the new year.

If the expiry date shown is December 31, 2009, you pay annually by cheque and should forward your payment before that date.

If you currently pay by cheque but are interested in the DDS payment method, you are invited to fill out the form included here.  (Click to see a printable form)

E-mail “Broadcast System”

By the time you read this the Kingston and District Branch e-mail Broadcast System will be almost a year old. It can't be declared a success yet. Out of a branch population of 3,769 we have 44 members signed up, that is 1.17% of the membership. But when you considered that 11 of the 44 who have signed up, were actually signed up by the webmaster because they are members of the Board of Directors of the Branch, that leave 33 who actually joined of their own free will, or 0.87% of the membership.

Do you own a computer? Do you have e-mail? Then why don't you join. We will not inundate you with pages of information but will direct you to the source of the information. You will of course be able to opt out of the system at any time you do not feel comfortable with the product and we guarantee that we will never give, lend, rent or sell your e-mail address to anyone.

If you are interested, send an e-mail to kingston.fsna@gmail.com; write: ‘FSNA K & D Branch electronic broadcast system’ in the subject line; and indicate your desire to register and receive your FSNA news and notifications via e-mail. We will ensure that you receive all your news and notifications electronically and that your name does not appear on our telephone list anymore until and unless you decide that the phone is a better option for you.
